Literacy
Jana Mitchell and Molly Saffle are the literacy teachers at Everett Elementary. They serve both second and third grade students. The intent of the literacy program is to accelerate students to the classroom reading average. Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Saffle are Reading Recovery trained teachers who work with small groups of students. Strategies for successful, independent reading and writing are the focus for the groups.
Tips to help your child at home
When your child gets stuck on a word have him/her...
Think about the story.
Think of a word that would make sense there.
Reread the sentence or paragraph.
If this is unsuccessful try...
Looking for chunks in words such as diagraphs, th, ch and sh and vowel diagraphs, ee, ea, oo, ai, etc.
Getting the word started and think what would make sense.
Reading the syllable break and think what would make sense.
Making an analogy...Do you know a word that looks similar to this word?
When your child makes a SIGNIFICANT error that compromises the meaning of the story...
Tell him/her to try that again.
Tell him/her to find the mistake and fix it.
